Bernard of Clairvaux

Bernard of Clairvaux was a very important philosopher and influenced many minds. The document “BERNARD OF CLAIRVAUX: APOLOGY” was a document released by Fordham University about Bernard of Clairvaux. This document was directed to religious and spiritual people; it could even reach out to wealthy people who were not very religious. It wasan apology from Bernard because the church had spent more time and money on making the church visually appealing and less about spreading the message of the church. This document also showed how similar society back then was to society today. Bernard of Clairvaux was such a big influence on religion.
The document “BERNARD OF CLAIRVAUX: APOLOGY” was directed toward religious people and wealthy people who weren’t religious. “It is spent so that it will increase. Pouring it out produces more of it. Faced with expensive but marvelous vanities, people are inspired to contribute rather than pray ”(BERNARD OF CLAIRVAUX: APOLOGY) They probably targeted the wealthy because the wealthy focused on money and not prayer, and route to wealth could be filled with sin and crime. The document targeted religious church goers as well. Bernard was apologizing for the time and money spent on the church instead of that time being spent on spreading the message of the church. Bernard realized that spending money on a church wasnt a smart idea Clairvaux stated, “Why decorate what we must walk upon? What good is it to have attractive pictures where they’re usually stained with dirt ”(BERNARD OF CLAIRVAUX:APOLOGY). Bernard realized that churches did not need to be flashy in order to get the message across.
The document “BERNARD OF CLAIRVAUX:APOLOGY) is an apology for mixing wealth and religion. Religion and wealth should never go together. Money is power and the more you have the more powerful you are, and religion should never be like that. Religion should never have any sort of authority or hierarchy.
